NISHIURA

o1

The largest Showa-era retro drinking district at the foot of Mount Fuji

At the foot of Mount Fuji, in the city of Fujiyoshida known for its textile industry, there is a drinking district called "Nishiura." Once a leading entertainment district in the Kanto region where geisha would gather, it was also the largest night-life district around the Fuji Five Lakes. As the textile industry declined and merchants and geisha left the town, the lively atmosphere of Nishiura quieted down.

Although the hustle and bustle of the past is no longer present, there are still dozens of bars and izakayas lining the streets. The quiet and refined evenings in Nishiura have become a place of relaxation for local residents and travelers visiting Mount Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes.

Why not visit Fujiyoshida to capture a photo with the majestic Mount Fuji, experience the local culture, and savor the romantic ambiance of the drinking district? It's a unique opportunity to engage with the community and enjoy the serene nights in the shadow of iconic Mount Fuji.

Shinsekai Kanpai Street

Since 2015, the deserted Shinsekai Street has gradually been revitalized through the efforts of local residents, the city government, and university students. Currently, there are a total of eight establishments lining the alley, featuring creatively themed dining options such as Italian restaurants, izakayas, Japanese-style pubs, cocktail bars, and more. Visitors can experience the diverse culinary culture of Japan in this revitalized area.

子の神神社

Nenokami shrine

Near Nishiura Street, there is a small shrine called "Nenokami shrine" on Nenokami Street. This shrine is the ancestral deity of the Miyashita family in the Koasumi district of Fujiyoshida City, and later became the guardian deity of local shops in the Nishiura Street area. It was considered a solemn place for seeking prosperity for the businesses in this district, including the working women in hotels and geisha. It was regarded as a place of reverence and solace for those seeking success in their endeavors.
